The beginning of the third issue of Handwoven magazine

The persian rug carries hidden narratives that embody part of our historical identity as persian. History is not only narrated in books and stone inscriptions; sometimes it continues on a bed of warp and weft, color, and human hands, and sometimes it continues in the hearts of thousands of untold stories of weavers, creators, or rug lovers. A rug is a wordless document of our lives and beliefs, recording events not with words but with patient knots. In each design and pattern, there is a trace of an era; an era that shows the effort, love, and creativity of a people who have preserved the artistic and cultural identity of their land. But amidst this incredible heritage, the history of the persian rug, like the meaning of the pattern and writing, is layered and hidden. Parts of this history remain in the shadows; stories that are neither mentioned in official texts nor told in museums. The hidden narrative of rug that have created patterns at the great turning points of history; rug that have been messengers of peace or signs of power, and weavers who have silently written history on the frame of the rug. And also rug that after years, away from the eyes and hearts of their weavers, in the silence and darkness of time, burned so that the traces of a hidden crime remain hidden, without anyone knowing about their story. Under the title of a narrative of the corners of the hidden history of persian rug, we are searching for these untold narratives in this third issue of Handwoven. We try to reread corners of this hidden history from long ago to the present; the history of rug that have witnessed the ages, have passed through them, and have themselves become part of our collective memory.
